Assembling the butterflies into a swarm

The numerical grid shows the pattern of how many butterflies would be attached to each of the strings hanging from the abbey ceiling, eventually becoming the shape of the swarm in flight. The grid was created by writing a piece of software that read the colour values of two png files that visually showed the desired formation (side and top view). The greyscale png files were hand drawn on computer.

This grid was used as a guidance document for the team of student workers involved in attaching each individual butterfly to its string. The file of butterfly designs shows 100 out of the 5000 individual butterfly designs used for this project.
