posted on 2021-03-20, 14:37 authored by Dexter DalwoodThe series of paintings by Dexter Dalwood that form An Inadequate Painted History of Mexico arose from a residency in Mexico in 2017, and discussions with the local community and secondary school students Oaxaca state. The paintings have been constructed in order to raise questions in the viewer’s mind: What is the history that is being depicted? Who does this history belong to? Is it possible for an artist that is not from one culture to make images that are specifically about another culture?
The original opening date for the solo show at MUNAL, (Museo Nacional de Arte) Mexico City was June 2020. The exhibition was postponed due to Covid-19 and will now open from 23rd September 2021 – 30th January 2022.
This item contains images of the paintings chosen to appear in the MUNAL exhibition, drawings of murals that will be drawn on the walls at MUNAL and a list of paintings from the MUNAL collection that will be shown alongside Dalwood's paintings.
