Material Soundsystems explores the possibilities of forging symbiotic and dynamic connections between the seemingly opposite properties of sound and matter. This research is bought together in 3 new projects, Mute, Ecstatic Material and Bloom where live performative experiments are conducted to test how sound animates materials and materials create sound.

This item contains 8 performance views, 2 pages from the Borealis Festival Programme, 1 limited edition poster by the artist, and a promotional video.

This item documents the staging of Ecstatic Material at the Borealis Festival, a festival of experimental music in Bergen, Norway. Commissioned by Outlands, Ecstatic Material is a collaborative performance between musician and producer Beatrice Dillon and artist Keith Harrison. After its 9 venues in 9 days tour in the UK in February 2019, the artists were invited to give 3 performances of Ecstatic Material at Lydgalleriet, a non commercial Bergen based gallery for sound based practice, as part of the Borealis Festival, Bergen, Norway on 6th & 7th March 2020. The performance takes the form of a live experiment with sound and substance using modular systems of malleable materials and multi channelled audio equipment. Ecstatic Material was curated by Jennifer Lucy Allen and Al Cameron.

Documentation of other 2019 Ecstatic Material performances is contained in 3 other venues items: South London Gallery, Caustic Coastal, Manchester & Karst, Plymouth.

Outlands is a new national experimental touring network promoting interdisciplinary art and music.
