The practice-led project ‘Releasing the Archive’, undertaken in collaboration with dance-scholar Carol Brown (NZ/AUS), aims to re-articulate marginalised modernist exile-dance practices and histories, with reference to the work of Austrian Jewish choreographer Gertrud Bodenwieser (1890-1959) who pioneered Modern Dance in New Zealand and Australia after 1939. It embraces trends towards somatic-informed dance practices, performance-as-archive, and the revisioning of modernist dance legacies.

This item contains documentation of the screen based installation 'Displaced/Displayed: re-enacting dances of migration' which forms part of the output for this collection.

The installation was premiered as an 8 meter high installation over 30 screens on the Media Wall of Bath Spa University on the 15th of March 2017.

This work is part of the exhibition Alles Tanzt – Kosmos Wener Tanzmoderne, Theatermuseum Wien (2019/2020, Vienna.

This work has been presented at 'The Artist as Researcher' symposium at University of Bedfordshire on 6-7 June 2018; the symposium 'Beyond Forgetting 1938-2018' at Coburg University, Germany, 27-28 July 2018, and at the 'Jews and Jewishness in the Dance World Conference' at the State University of Arizona, 13-15 October 2018.

Artistic direction & research: Thomas Kampe
Editorial direction Manuela Jara
Choreographic research and direction: Carol Brown
Sound artist Russell Scoones
Video Artist: Meek Zuiderwyk
Video Assistant: Freddie Errazo
Dancers of The New Zealand Dance Company: Carl Tolentino, Lucy Linch, Chris Ofanoa , Katie Rudd.

Photographs courtesy of Thomas Kampe (dancers Carl Tolentino, Lucy Lynch, Chris Ofanoa and Katie Rudd)

Used with permission.

The work is under copyright and may not be used without permission.
