Sadang B: To Paint The Portrait of a Bird, Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul, Korea
Sadang B (2019) is an exhibition project comprised of three newly commissioned projects, Un-Splitting (Performance), The White Mask (Music performance) and To Paint A Portrait of a Bird (Installation).This interdisciplinary project questions the normalisation of extreme nationalism and social inequality by exploring the human - animal boundary through the lens of those socially marginalised in South Korea. Sadang B is suggested as a site where these enquiries can take place.

This item documents To Paint A Portrait of a Bird, 1 of the 3 works shown as part of Sadang B at the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Seoul, Korea. Resembling a ceremonial space, To Paint a Portrait of a Bird is a large mesh birdcage only allowing the audience to access the 'inside' of the cage where artworks are displayed, while the 'outside' can only be viewed through mesh walls. Videos of birds are projected through the space with an accompanying soundscape of recorded bird song. The binary structure of the installation throws open the hierarchical positioning of birds and animals.
