Presentation given as part of Capturing Creativity Week 2024. Event 2: Institutional Perspectives, Tuesday 10th September, 2024.

Presentation by Prof. Michael Wilson, University of Brighton.

Presenter Biography: Dr Michael Wilson is the Academic Communications Manager for the University of Brighton. He has been working on the communication of Art, Design and Media research since 2007.  He wrote the ‘State of play in practice-led research’ report for the AHRC prior to REF2014 and has been responsible for the production of multi-component ‘porfolios’ for submitting Art, Design and Media outputs to the last three RAE/REFs.  He runs regular workshops and 1-2-1 sessions to develop staff understanding of how research insight generated through art and design can be best communicated to new audiences.  He is also working closely between the CRIS (Pure) team at the university and the School of Art and Media to develop a system for output submissions.

Presentation Synopsis: The University of Brighton fosters wide practice in the arts, design, media and architecture. Where the colleagues were required to submit ‘Outputs’ to a CRIS (PURE), the understanding of what constituted an output was diverse and bore little relation to what might become a multi-component output for REF.  This talk shares some of the challenges we face and the efforts we have put into working with staff to build these REF outputs in both previous RAE/REFs and harnessing the potential during the early stages of REF2029.
