Presentation 4 from the 'Capturing Creativity 2025' seminar series, on Wednesday 15th October, 2025.

Speaker: Dr. Roy Hanney.

Dr Roy Hanney is Associate Professor of Media Practice at Southampton Solent University. A creative practitioner and researcher, his work spans immersive audiovisual arts, live cinema, and documentary filmmaking. He is an active advocate for creative practice research, leading CPD programmes that support researchers in articulating and evidencing practice within academic and REF contexts. Roy’s recent focus includes developing peer review models for non-text-based and non-screen-based creative outputs, aiming to expand the ways practice is recognised and valued. He combines critical insight with a hands-on, collaborative approach to research development.

Abstract: In the evolving landscape of research assessment, creative practice researchers face the dual challenge of showcasing their work in its own aesthetic and experiential terms while also framing it as a contribution to knowledge. This is especially acute for non-text-based and non-screen-based practices, where conventional modes of peer review and research articulation often feel like an ill fit. Drawing on my work in developing peer review frameworks for such outputs, and on my experience running CPD for creative practice researchers, this presentation explores strategies for making practice legible as research without flattening its complexity. I will discuss practical approaches for evidencing rigour, originality, and significance; how to create meaningful contextual statements that resonate with both disciplinary peers and REF panels; and ways to design dissemination processes that honour the creative work itself. The session offers a critical and pragmatic guide to ensuring that diverse creative practices are recognised, reviewed, and valued within the academy.

This item contains: MP4 recording of the presentation with transcription and powerpoint slides.
